About Scott Newell
Whether it be standing in the middle of a Category 4 hurricane or traveling with presidential candidates, journalist/producer Scott Newell has found himself in the thick of some of the country's top stories. Scott has more than three decades of experience in reporting, producing, writing and video production. With 16 regional Emmy awards as well as numerous honors from the Associated Press, Sigma Delta Chi, Gannett and United Press International, Scott continues to produce contemporary video and audio content for a variety of national clients, both in front of and behind the camera.
Video production
He is an active contributor to NBC News, MSNBC, The Today Show, The Weather Channel, ABC News, Good Morning America and NFL Films. Scott is an accomplished reporter, videographer, editor and writer, staying current with the latest technological trends. He's fluent in Final Cut Pro X as well as various other production software and hardware, satellite, LiveU and Internet video transmission.
Other clients include Major League Baseball, Dateline NBC, 20/20, MSNBC's Forensic Files, the Food Network, A&E, The Discovery Channel, TLC, the Rachael Ray Show, The Chew and many more.
Scott has covered Hurricane Harvey (the costliest tropical cyclone on record) and Sandy, 2018's nor'easters plus several blizzards and tornadoes. For The Weather Channel, he was also one of the key reporters of 2017's devastating wildfires in California. In addition, his coverage of 2017's total solar eclipse came from a unique perspective: in a jet with a spectacular view from 40,000 feet.
Scott was a key producer for national coverage of violent clashes in Ferguson, MO, the Christmas Day underwear bomber near Detroit, the West Virginia coal mine disaster, plus the rescue of Iraq POW Jessica Lynch, the crash of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Susan Smith murder case, the Oklahoma City bombing and the O.J Simpson murder case.Scott's interest in automotive journalism has allowed him to visit some of the world's top auto shows, from Shanghai to Frankfurt to Detroit. He continues to review the world automakers' latest models regularly.
Scott has a rich and varied history as a journalist, beginning with his first job as a reporter for The Detroit News. After transitioning to television, Newell anchored and reported in Denver and Atlanta before filling the same role in Cleveland.
Newell spent five years as senior field producer for the nationally-syndicated program "A Current Affair." He helped debunk one of the long-standing conspiracy theories about the assassination of President John Kennedy involving three tramps in Dealey Plaza who were arrested on November 22, 1963.
His journalism career has put him face-to-face with a wide range of politicians, including 9 US Presidents and allowed him to climb into the cockpit of jets flown by the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.
Scott has also worked on several dramatic works in film and television, including Orion Pictures' "Sharky's Machine," NBC's "Another World" as well as television commercials for a variety of national clients.
Audio production and music
In addition to video production, Scott also is an accomplished musician and sound recordist. He’s played music with Glen Campbell, Chuck Mangione and Michael Bolton.
Shortly after graduating from college, Scott toured with the nationally-known folk group, The New Christy Minstrels..
